Maryland Cherry Blossom Mini Sessions for Families, Couples, and Motherhood Portraits
Each spring, cherry blossom mini sessions offer Maryland families a quick, low-stress way to update portraits during one of the prettiest weeks of the year. These sessions took place in Howard County Maryland beneath soft pink Kwanzan cherry blossoms, the later-blooming trees known for their full, fluffy blooms and warmer spring weather.
Unlike the early DC cherry blossoms, these April sessions bring greener landscapes, milder temperatures, and a much calmer experience for families with young children.

Where to Take Cherry Blossom Photos in the DMV
When most people think about cherry blossom photos in the DMV, they immediately picture Washington DC and the Tidal Basin. Those sessions can absolutely be beautiful, but they’re also a very different experience than what many families are actually looking for.
Washington DC Cherry Blossoms
The famous DC cherry blossoms are typically the first blooms of the season, which means sessions often happen in late March when the weather is still cold and the surrounding landscape hasn’t fully turned green yet. Sunrise sessions are also mandatory to avoid crowds around the monuments and guarantee parking.
Howard County and Montgomery County Cherry Blossom Photos
The cherry blossoms featured in these mini sessions are Kwanzan cherry trees, the big fluffy pink blooms that arrive a few weeks later in April. That later timing creates a much fuller spring look with greener grass, warmer temperatures, and softer evening light.
For families with young children, that difference matters. Evening sessions become much easier than waking toddlers before sunrise for a crowded DC session.
While the session shown here is in Howard County I know of some great spots in Rockville Maryland if that’s a better location.

Are Cherry Blossom Mini Sessions Good for Families With Young Kids?
Honestly, they can be perfect.
Mini sessions move quickly, which works beautifully for many toddlers who simply do best when things stay playful and fast-paced. We keep kids moving, interacting, snuggling, and exploring rather than expecting long periods of standing still and smiling.
For many families, that shorter format actually produces happier kids and more genuine expressions.
That said, some toddlers really do better with a full-length session instead.
Some children need time to warm up before they want to participate. Others need breaks between photographing. That slower pacing is where a full session can become incredibly valuable.
This is especially true for maternity sessions with older siblings. A full-length session allows us to pause for toddler breaks, photograph maternity portraits separately, and create more variety throughout the gallery.
What Should You Wear for Cherry Blossom Photos?
Cherry blossoms already bring so much softness and color into the frame, so wardrobe works best when it complements that feeling rather than competing with it.
Some of my favorite choices for spring sessions include:
- creams and soft neutrals
- pale blue
- dusty rose
- sage green
- soft florals
- flowing fabrics and linen textures
I typically recommend avoiding neon colors, harsh black clothing, and heavy patterns that distract from the softness of the blooms.

Should You Book a Mini Session or Full Cherry Blossom Session?
Cherry blossom mini sessions are:
- 15 minutes
- 5 images (chosen from about 30-50 images)
- $350
Families can also upgrade to the full gallery afterward for an additional $250.
For many families who already know they want the full gallery, this is where it becomes worth considering whether a full-length session may be the better fit.
Full sessions begin at $850 and include:
- a full hour session
- the full gallery
- outfit changes
- more flexibility for toddlers
- more image variety
- additional maternity portraits
- slower pacing overall
Two of the sessions photographed during bloom week were actually full-length sessions because the extra time allowed for outfit changes, toddler breaks, and a much more relaxed rhythm.

When Do Cherry Blossoms Bloom in Maryland?
Cherry blossoms are one of the shortest and least predictable bloom seasons we photograph all year.
This year, several consecutive 90-degree days pushed the blooms nearly a week and a half earlier than expected, and all of the sessions had to move quickly to stay within peak bloom.
Unlike lavender season, fall leaves, or Christmas tree sessions, cherry blossoms often only last a few days at their best.
That flexibility is one of the most important things families should understand when booking spring bloom sessions. Once the trees peak, we have to move quickly.
Are Dogs Allowed at Cherry Blossom Mini Sessions?
Yes, absolutely. Dogs are always welcome at outdoor sessions when the location allows them.
Privacy Options for Family Sessions
Every family who books cherry blossom mini sessions now has the ability to choose a privacy level that feels comfortable for them directly within the booking process.
Options currently include:
- full permission to share images for portfolio and marketing use
- sharing images while limiting visibility of children’s faces
- complete gallery privacy
One of the families featured in this post selected limited sharing for their children, while another chose to keep their entire session private.
As both a photographer and a parent, I believe families deserve more flexibility around how their images are shared online. At the same time, thoughtful portfolio sharing is an important part of helping future clients understand whether my work and approach feel like the right fit for their family.
