A timeless studio session full of softness, sentiment, and a little bit of cake

Studio-Style Milestone Portraits in Howard County

One year feels impossibly fast and completely earned all at once. Photographing Sammy’s first birthday portraits was both a professional exercise in intentional portraiture and a personal labor of love—because this sweet, curious boy is my son.

I had a clear vision for how I wanted to mark this milestone. While most of our family sessions are either in-home or on-location, for this I knew I wanted a clean, studio-style approach. Seamless paper, soft carpet, and thoughtful, neutral styling created a space where Sammy could just be himself—no distractions, no excess. We began with classic milestone portraits: simple props, natural expressions, and quiet moments that let his personality lead.

His favorite stuffed animal, a white bison named Blizzard, made a subtle appearance—a nod to his buffalo heritage and a gentle grounding point in the images. We added a bench and a few books, keeping the environment understated and serene. One-year-olds sit at the perfect intersection of babyness and emerging identity. There’s a roundness, a softness, a gravity to this age that begs to be documented—not in a trendy way, but in a way that honors how brief this phase really is.

Studio Cake Smash Photography That’s Clean, Calm, and Joyful

The cake smash was an intentional second act to the session—designed not only for the sticky joy it brings, but also to complement the classic portraits with a burst of play. Seamless paper served both functional and visual roles: easy cleanup for the studio setting, but also a clean canvas that let the colors and motion shine.

Sammy surprised me by really engaging with the cake. Many one-year-olds touch the frosting, cry, or crawl away (which is why cake smashes always require a team—my husband Ryan and my mom stood just out of frame, ready to redirect). But Sammy lingered, exploring the texture, poking at the frosting, getting gloriously sticky. I don’t know that he ever actually ate any of it—but watching him investigate it with such quiet curiosity felt perfectly true to who he is right now.

This portion of the session added a physical energy that balanced the stillness of the portraits. Not chaotic, just more tactile—joy you could actually see on his hands.

Why I Photographed This Session Myself

While we’ve worked with other photographers throughout our Motherhood Collection, I knew I wanted to personally photograph this milestone. It mattered to me not just as his mother, but as an artist. This session was a love letter to the kind of work I want to create more of—studio portraits that feel both elevated and deeply personal.

What I hoped to create was a gallery that felt timeless in every sense. These aren’t photos tied to a particular trend or holiday. They’re portraits you could frame today—or 30 years from now—and still feel that same weight of recognition: this was who he was.

Planning your own Howard County Cake Smash?

If you’re considering a cake smash or one-year session for your baby, know that it doesn’t have to be styled with balloons or props or noise. It can be focused, intentional, and joyful in a way that feels like your child. Whether at home or in a studio setting, the point isn’t the set—it’s the subject.

Thinking about milestone portraits or a studio cake smash in Maryland? I’d love to help you create something honest and heirloom-worthy. Reach out here to begin planning.
