This in-home newborn session in Ashburn, Virginia documents the second chapter of Kim and Tam’s Motherhood Collection, following their maternity session at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Photographed in the home they lovingly designed together, Olive’s newborn session reflects everything this season holds: quiet tenderness, intentional spaces, and the steady presence of two parents settling into life with their daughter. For families considering in-home newborn photography in Northern Virginia, this session is a beautiful example of how meaningful and timeless photographs can feel without ever leaving home.
A calm, light-filled newborn session at home in Northern Virginia

From anticipation to presence
When I photographed Kim and Tam’s maternity session, there was a sense of anticipation woven through every frame — the pause before everything changes. Returning to photograph them again, this time with Olive in their arms, felt like stepping into the answer to that waiting.
One of the greatest joys of photographing Motherhood Collections is witnessing continuity. I’ve known Kim and Tam since their wedding day, and the same strengths that defined their relationship then — gentleness, attentiveness, and quiet partnership — now shape how they move through parenthood. There was no rush during this session. Just presence.
Tam, always tender with Kim, had seamlessly stepped into life as a girl dad. From the moment I arrived, he was already in motion — checking in on both of them, adjusting the space, making sure everyone was comfortable. It’s a quiet kind of care that doesn’t ask to be noticed, but it’s felt everywhere.

A nursery built with love and intention
Olive’s nursery tells a story all its own.
With a background in construction, Tam designed and built much of the home himself, and the nursery was no exception. Custom wall molding framed the room with softness and structure. A delicate baby pink wrapped the space in warmth. A custom nameplate bearing Olive’s name anchored the room with meaning. It wasn’t styled for photos; it was created for her.
Photographing newborn sessions in spaces that have been so intentionally shaped is always a gift. These details matter because they are part of the family’s story — and years from now, they will be remembered just as vividly as the way Olive fit perfectly in their arms.

Letting the home lead the session
One of the things I value most about the families I work with is their willingness to trust the space they’re in.
After spending time in the nursery and bedroom, we moved into the heart of the home — the kitchen and dining area Tam had fully custom renovated. We gently pulled the dining table aside and used the built-in bench he designed, allowing the light to pour in and the room to breathe. What emerged were glowing, connected family portraits that felt effortless and honest.
This is one of the reasons I love in-home newborn photography. You don’t need a perfect house or a large space — just light, intention, and the willingness to let real life unfold.

The beauty of a steady beginning
This session unfolded with a quiet steadiness that felt deeply fitting for this season of their lives. Olive settled easily between her parents, already at home in their arms, surrounded by a rhythm of care and devotion that felt natural and unforced. Kim moved with a calm confidence, and Tam stayed close — attentive, grounding, fully present. These are the moments that grow more meaningful with time. Not because they are extraordinary, but because they are real — a true reflection of what the beginning of parenthood often looks like when love is steady and deeply rooted.

A continuing Motherhood Collection
This newborn session is the second chapter in Kim and Tam’s Motherhood Collection, following their maternity session at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Together, these sessions tell a story not just of pregnancy and birth, but of becoming — of a family expanding while staying beautifully true to itself.
Next, we’ll document Olive again as she reaches the seven-month milestone — a season full of movement, curiosity, and emerging personality. Each chapter builds on the last, creating a legacy that reflects both where they’ve been and who they are becoming.
