A backyard and in-home family session in Montgomery County, Maryland

One year ago, Lillian and Autumn were just a few pounds each, swaddled side by side in pink blankets. Today, they’re crawling in tandem across their living room floor—curious, expressive, and full of joy. This final session in their Motherhood Collection was a celebration of the first year: a chapter marked by transformation, tenderness, and presence.

We began the session inside the family’s Gaithersburg home, where I’d photographed both their newborn and six-month milestones. But this time, the atmosphere felt different. The quiet tenderness of those early days had given way to playful movement and laughter. The girls weren’t just observing the world anymore—they were engaging with it, crawling toward toys, reaching for one another, and squealing with delight every time someone flipped them upside down.

That shift from softness to silliness is one of the most joyful parts of photographing one-year-olds. Zarah and Jay leaned right into it, laughing as they gently roughhoused with the girls on the floor, letting them tumble, roll, and bounce between their arms. The whole living room became a stage for play. It was clear this family had found not just their rhythm—but their fun.

After some time indoors, we returned to their backyard—just like we had during their maternity session one year earlier. The June air was warm, the light gentle, and the trees still stood as witnesses to their journey. But this time, the arms that once cradled a belly now reached down to scoop up crawling toddlers. Frankie the dog joined in again too, content in his role as the steady companion and watchful big brother.

After wrapping up outside, we came back in for the cake smash—one of those moments parents often imagine for months. Each girl had her own strawberry shortcake, carefully set up side by side. But like many one-year-olds, they were more confused than excited. A few hesitant pokes, some frosting on their fingers, and then… tears. It didn’t last long. The girls made it clear they were over it, and that was that. Fortunately, Frankie happily stepped in to help with cleanup. He probably enjoyed the cakes more than anyone.

This session marked the close of their Complete Motherhood Collection, but more than that, it marked a family fully arrived. A year ago, there was anticipation. Now, there is presence. And joy. And a home that holds it all.
