A Backyard Maternity Session for Twin Girls in Gaithersburg, Maryland
As a Maryland maternity photographer, I’ve found that some of the most tender sessions don’t happen in sweeping landscapes or curated studios—but right at home, where life is already unfolding. For Zarah and Jay, expecting twin girls, their Gaithersburg backyard became the quiet, sunlit backdrop to a story that’s just beginning.
This was more than a maternity session—it was a pause before everything changed.
Zarah was in the final weeks of a high-risk twin pregnancy. A scheduled C-section was on the horizon, and they knew their daughters would likely arrive early. Still, that morning carried an unmistakable calm. Jay and Zarah radiated grounded joy—so present, so connected, so ready.
Jay, especially, wore his excitement visibly. He spoke about becoming a girl dad with such earnest love, already imagining the bond he’d share with his daughters. And the way he looked at Zarah—as she stood in the soft light, one hand resting on her belly—said everything.
Their dog Frankie added his own charm to the morning, weaving through the grass, flopping down beside them, and occasionally stealing the spotlight. I always say pets have a way of anchoring us—and Frankie brought just the right levity to balance the emotion of the day.
This session is the beginning of something larger: Zarah and Jay are documenting their family’s journey through the Complete Motherhood Collection—a full year of portraits that includes maternity, newborn, six-month, and one-year sessions. It’s one of my favorite offerings, because it honors the story as a whole. Not just the arrival, but the becoming.
